The garden was conceived about 1900 by Mr Charles Tudway. At the beginning of the 20th Century the ground was transformed into the existing series of architectural terraces that capitalise on the glorious views of the Cathedral and the Vale of Avalon.
The Central Terrace - Consists of a gently sloping lawn bordered by a mixed planting of shrubs and perennials. The north side has a high wall that shelters the numerous plants including solanums, clematis and a loquat.
The Upper Terrace - Has stunning views of Wells Cathedral, Glastonbury Tor and the Vale of Avalon. Below the terrace a variety of trees are underplanted with naturalised spring bulbs and wild flowers.
The Sundial Terrace - Old roses form the basis of the long border beneath the terrace wall. From either end this terrace is finely balanced with the long border of shrub roses contrasting well with the simplicity of the lawn and yew hedge on the other side of the path.
The Pool Terrace - At the western end of the sundial terrace steps lead down next to the summerhouse to the swimming pool which is set at one end of the large lawn. Low growing shrubs and perennials mingle in the long border under the yew topped retaining wall.
The Combe - An eight acre arboretum and woodland garden which is a natural and peaceful oasis on the very edge of the city and a pleasant contrast to the formal terraced gardens.
The Lily Pond - In a corner of the Central Terrace next to the path that leads through to the stable yard is a stone-edged lily pond which is set in a small rectangular gravel terrace furnished with pots of geraniums, fuchsias, lilies and agapanthus. From here there is a fine view over the pool terrace to the distant landscape and Glastonbury Tor.
