Roman Baths

I have been coming to England for 30 years.   I have always wanted to visit the Roman Baths but never had the opportunity.  On this trip I was determined to get there.  It was even better than I had expected.
I thought we would just see the bath’s themselves and it would only take an hour.  We ended up spending over three hours - and could have spent even more time!  The self guided audio tour was easy and informative.  It is self paced so you can choose to go through either quickly or take your time on specific areas of interest.

The exhibits were wonderful and gives a great feeling of what the baths must have been like in the Roman times.  I especially liked the animation that portrayed Romans in the bath themselves and animation that laid over the ruins so you could see what the buildings were actually like.

Mike does wells and pumps for a living so he was fascinated by the engineering.  He spent a long time talking to the well informed and friendly docent.  It is amazing that after 2000 years the drains and the reservoir are functioning today.  I asked Mike if he gives a 2000 guarantee on his work.  Mike laughed and said his warranty is one year parts and labour.

Mike was pleased to learn that the Romans didn’t have to deal with the lowest bidder but was unnerved to learn that Roman architects were publicly executed if the building they designed collapsed.  (The baths didn’t collapse however.)

If you have the time, visit the Thermae Bath Spa which is a block away from the Roman Baths and experience bathing in the hot springs just like the Romans did 2000 years ago.
