The Old Station Inn & Carriage Restaurant

If serving food in a converted railway carriage was not enough the food itself was the closest to perfect I have ever had in a pub. I confess that I was not expecting such a good meal or service based upon the website and stock menu but I found an informal and very friendly pub filled with locals (and a friendly local pub is hard to find!) which stocked some nice but fairly average ales. The menu is fairly standard - though very well cooked and with large portions - pub grub; but it was the specials that caught my eye.

The waitress had to repeat the specials list twice because we had forgotten what was at the start when we got to the end. The options ranged from the commonplace-but-well-done (like chicken and wild mushroom pie and chips) to the avant-garde (like ostrich steak on mushroom risotto). All the meals were well presented and tasted great!

As well as the food I was very impressed by the service. The Landlady and staff were all very relaxed and friendly creating an interesting mix between the formality of a ’proper’ restaurant with the friendlier aspects of a pub. Food preparation was also impressive with the staff producing food to a consistent high standard. I was also impressed by the fact that they managed to produce the meals for a party of six in more or less the same time as it took them to produce meals for my party of three; and all from a small kitchen!

If you are in the area, especially during the summer season you can do an awful lot worse than eating here!
