With the smell of perfume and excitement in the air, the seats at the Motor point area in Cardiff filled with fans ready for the show. The doors opened at half past six on Monday the 5th of December. Street sellers shouted for custom as they laid their t-shirts and tour tags on the cold concrete of the street outside. We entered and took our seats on the floor in front of the stage. The Saturdays, plus special guests. We didn’t know who the special guests would be. Outside there were a couple of young girls with ’I love Jedward’ t-shirts on so we suspected it may be them making an appearance but it wasn’t in the end. There was an overwhelming smell of hot dogs and cider as the girls sitting next to us were topping up their glasses very often.
The show started at around half past seven when a group called NVS came on stage and sang three songs. The crowd didn’t take well to them, they tried to increase the atmosphere but instead deflated it somewhat. This may have been because the audience didn’t know who they were and their music was quite different to The Saturdays. The next act was Daniella Brooker, she went down slightly better as her music was catchy and aimed at the right age range of the audience who seemed to be around thirteen to nineteen and female. Most accompanied by their parents. The next act to come on stage was ’Oh My’ and they, I am sorry to say, did not go down well at all. They failed to get the audience excited and ready for the real act of the night and to be quite honest couldn’t really sing that well at all. This was disappointing as The Saturdays have a huge fan base and to show three acts that none of their fans are familiar with I feel didn’t work as well as they may have thought.
The Saturdays came on at around half past nine and by that time the mood wasn’t exactly buzzing in the arena. But everyone soon cheered up and excitement filled the air once more when the music started, everyone got up and started dancing, thrilled. The girls came down onto the stage in a cage singing the song ’Notorious’, one of the first things I noticed and a lot of other people around me noticed was how thin Frankie was due to her unknown illness.
At the end of the second song Una announced that her and her bump were going to have a tea break, which made everyone laugh. The backup dancers had their own song and their names came on the big screen as they came on stage, The Sats were off stage at this point. It was really nice to see a lot of recognition given to the dancers and this was done for the band and all members of the team at the end of the show, which was really nice and unusual for everyone to get recognition. The show began to come to an end at around half past ten. The came on and sang a Christmas song which gave a real magical feel to the arena, they all dressed in little Santa outfits and fake snow fell from the ceiling. At the end they sang ’Higher’ which really got the crowd going as it is one of their best and most loved songs. The show was brilliant and The Saturdays really made an effort, they spoke and interacted with the crowd updating us all on what they had been doing and what they were going to do and they even made a special announcement to a girl who’s birthday it was. A good time was had by all!
